Politik

Everyone, take out your iPods and CDs (cassette players, too - if you still have them) and que up "Politician" by Cream. I'll wait.

O.k. - so I know it's been over a month since my last post. Last time I checked, we were free. As in "from tyranny" free. From oppression and such. This week, I found that to not be quite as true as folks would have you to believe.
In high school, I had very specific political views, and even had a card identifying me as a member of a certain political group. Because somehow I believed they still stood for something. But somewhere along the way one of us changed. Sort of an "it's not you - it's me" situation. I could spend some time trying to figure out who changed, but lets be honest - we know it was both of us.
Well, I made the mistake of posting on my Facebook page that I was supporting a particular candidate in this particular election year. Because I thought I had the right to since my friends were posting all of their particular bias on their pages and sending it to me to boot.
Apparently, the southern mafia is still alive and well. One friend saw what I posted and all hell broke loose. People in my small town church all think that I am going to bust the gates of hell off of their hinges when I roll through simply because I took the time to investigate and read and tried to make an intelligent choice. They are all appalled that I am not voting for "So-And-So" and how could I support "thus-and-such". My dad won't really talk to me any more and all my mom can do is cry.
"I support the Left, but I'm leanin' to the Right" (du-nuh/ DU-NUH /du-nuh du-nuh du-nuh).
I guess we're never as free as we'd like to think. I'll think twice before I ever tell anyone what I believe in my heart just to save myself the beating and shame! Fear-mongers UNITE!!

WISH

So tonight, I was on a drive with my wife. I put on Genesis - "The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway". It could be one of the most amazing concept albums I know. Peter Gabriel was still writing for them, Phil Collins was still behind the drums - just amazing. It made me think - who would I love to see on tour? I'm talking arch enemies who have vowed to never set foot in the same town much less on stage together jumping on a bus and hitting the road. Here's a list. Feel free to add to it. Let's limit it to bands with 3/4 of the original members still living.

1. Genesis - the original line up with Peter Gabriel on vox.
2. Led Zeppelin
3. Yes
4. Metallica - original line up
5. Bad Company
6. Black Sabbath
7. Bob Seger and the Silver Bullet Band
8. *I'm sad because I want to put Boston here, and Brad Delp is no longer alive. Sad.
9. Cream
10. Eagles
11. Fleetwood Mac
12. Jethro Tull
13. Journey
14. King Crimson - the 1969 line-up
15. Pink Floyd
16. Police
17. Pretenders
18. Rush
19. Steve Miller Band
20. Styx
21. Supertramp
22. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
23. Van Halen - original line up
24. AC/DC

You'll notice that these are mostly classic rock bands. I realized this list was getting out of hand. Anyway - add to the list. You know you want to . . .
